Presidential candidates reply to questions on secular issues

Atheist Ireland is asking voters to consider the position of candidates on secular issues before voting for President on Thursday.

Four of the seven Presidential candidates have committed to recognising equally the rights of atheist and agnostic citizens if elected President, in replies to questions from Atheist Ireland. Currently an atheist or agnostic cannot become President as there is a constitutional requirement for the President to swear a religious oath asking God to direct and sustain them.

Mary Davis has said: “As President, I would recognise the rights of all Irish people, including atheists and agnostics… I believe that Article 44 (the religion clause) of the Constitution should be amended to reflect and recognise the right of non-belief. I believe that the best way in which this can be achieved is via constitutional referendum.”

Michael D Higgins has said: “There is to be a constitutional convention in the new year – which I fully support – and it is at this forum that matters such as the (religious) oath (for becoming President) ought to be examined. It is of great importance that the Presidency and all surrounding it ought to be fit for purpose for a modern state with a population comprising a large number of different religious beliefs as well as none.”

Gay Mitchell has said: “I believe that all citizens should have the right to run for president. A constitutional convention is due to review the constitutional text next year. I would suggest you lobby it on the issue. As president, I could not possibly intervene to advocate a specific constitutional change. But I would be comfortable with a change that recognises the rights of believers and non-believers equally by making declarations to God optional.”

David Norris has said: “During my life and political career I have always treated all citizens as equal… While I believe in God, I believe in a total separation between the State and church, and therefore would consider myself secular in this regard… Look at my record and what I said about the prayer on the order of business on the Senate.”

The Martin McGuinness campaign sent an interim reply, and Sean Gallagher and Dana Rosemary Scallon have yet to reply, to the questions asked by Atheist Ireland three weeks ago. If any of these candidates reply before the election takes place, we will update this page to include their reply.

Here are the full replies by Mary Davis, Michael D Higgins, Gay Mitchell and David Norris.

Atheist Ireland report from OSCE human rights conference in Poland

Every year in Warsaw, Poland the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) organizes a two-week conference called the Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (HDIM).

The HDIM is a forum where OSCE participating States together with Partners for Co-operation, civil society, OSCE institutions and field operations and other international organizations discuss the implementation of human dimension commitments that were adopted by consensus at prior OSCE Summits or Ministerial Meetings.

Michael Nugent and Jane Donnelly attended the Conference on behalf of Atheist Ireland.

Working sessions are held on each day of the Conference, on subjects relevant to particular OSCE commitments. The particular session that we wanted to attend was on ‘Freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief ’ and this was on Tuesday 27th of September. We intended to take the opportunity to speak on behalf of Atheist Ireland at this meeting.

One of the vital points with regard to these meetings is that NGO’s have an opportunity to address the full conference. Delegations from the Irish Government and the Holy See attended the Conference, among many other OSCE members states.

Update on the campaign against the Irish blasphemy law

This is an update on the ongoing work that we have been doing in the campaign against the Irish blasphemy law, which is still on the Irish statute books.

Our campaign against this law took a different and less confrontational focus when the previous Justice Minister accepted that the law should be repealed, and again when the new Government was elected and has outlined the process by which it intends to address the issue, i.e. through a Constitutional Convention which should be established next year to address this and other Constitutional issues.

Because of these developments, and also because Atheist Ireland was at the time a new organisation and we did not want to be defined solely by our opposition to the blasphemy law, we have been focusing publicly on other issues including the need for a secular education system. However, in the background, we have been actively continuing the campaign against the blasphemy law.

The really, truly True Believer™ of the Month Award September 2011

This month in the worlds clear bastion of love and equality known as Saudi Arabia a woman is to be whipped for the heinous crime of driving while being under the influence of…. being female. This in a country that does not yet allow women to vote but has finally announced a willingness to allow this. Maybe. But not until 2015.

Still with the vote coming and many women taking to cars despite the ban it is clear that theocracy is no longer enough to control our planets women like pets.

Atheist Ireland attends OSCE human rights conference in Warsaw

Atheist Ireland chairperson Michael Nugent and Education Policy Officer Jane Donnelly are in Poland today for the OSCE Human Rights Conference on Human Rights. This is the first time an Irish atheist advocacy group has taken part in an OSCE event. We will highlight the need for a secular Irish Constitution, education system and laws where the state is neutral about religion and protects the equal right of each citizen to freedom of and from religion.

The OSCE is the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. It includes 56 States from Europe, North America and Asia. Next year Ireland will chair the OSCE for the first time. This week’s conference in Warsaw is about how the OSCE States address human rights issues, and Atheist Ireland will take part in the session this morning on freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief.

Earlier this year, the World Atheist Convention in Dublin launched a new umbrella advocacy group called Atheist Alliance International, which we hope will be liaising with the OSCE on a regular basis in future years. Delegates at that Convention also debated and adopted the Dublin Declaration on Secularism and the Place of Religion in Public Life. Today we urge all OSCE States and NGOs to discuss, adopt and promote the principles in the Dublin Declaration on Secularism.

In particular, we urge the Irish State to hold referenda to remove the religious clauses of our Constitution, to establish a secular State education system that respects the human rights of all citizens, to replace religious oaths for officeholders and in courts with neutral declarations, and to repeal the Irish blasphemy law and the clauses that exempt religious organisations from complying with Irish equality laws.

Religious States promote religion. Atheist States promote atheism. We want a secular State, which promotes neither. We want a secular State for a pluralist people, where citizens behave ethically and the State does not take sides on religious issues.

The price of Sky Pilots

Guest post by Atheist Ireland member GT.
—————————————-
In a recent letter to the Irish Independent a correspondent noted that the Irish state’s new law term on the 3rd of October will commence with a roman catholic mass attended by representatives of the legal profession, judiciary, An Garda Siochana and the Defence Forces.

Why the Irish state should pay judges, policemen and soldiers to attend catholic mass in this day and age is beyond me. But I was not surprised when I recalled the religious worship forced onto me and colleagues in a previous occupation…that being a member of the Defence Forces.

The really, truly True Believer™ of the Month Award August 2011

Back to form after last month’s horrific pedophile story being a clear winner, there is a two way tie again this month in the voting for the August prize, which should add to the horror of trying to pick an overall 2011 winner in January.

The LA Times this month carried a story on Catholics who still have an issue with Galileo for trying to take away the teachings they still hold on to from 4 centuries ago about the earth’s position in the universe.

Matching it at the number one position this month however is Christian Midwife Hannah Adewole who thinks she should be exempt from wearing the same uniform as all the other people she works with because of her faith. Deuteronomy in her mind bans her from wearing trousers or any clothes “meant” for the opposite sex.

Clearly god with his infinite powers, intellect, knowledge and goodness finds cause to worry about who wears the pants down here on earth. Sure what else would god have to worry about? Probably not the muslim girls being raped merely because they are “capable” of having sex. No. Trousers are much more important than that.

The really, truly True Believer™ of the Month Award July 2011

Unusually there was one clear winner this month but the surprise fades away when one realizes why as it is yet another example of Religion being involved in the sexual abuse, and justification and/or cover up of the sexual abuse, of Children.

Despite some votes going to Austria for acknowledging the religious rights of it’s citizens to follow their Flying Spaghetti Monster religion by wearing a colander on their head in their Driving license photos…. and to Poland for hosting a meeting of Exorcists against Vampires…. top spot was taken this month by a new Saudi Fatwa that defends Pedophilia as “Marriage”.

Dr. Salih bin Fawzan the issuer of this particular fatwa is keeping his options wide open by declaring that even girls „in the cradle“ are old enough to be married off.

One can only hope that the rest of the world continues to be able to tell the difference between the words Pedophilia and Marriage. And between the words consummate and rape. And will realize that people like Mohammad did not “consummate” a marriage with a 9 year old. He raped her.

The sick pedophiles concerned simply declare that sex is not permitted until the child is “capable”. One wonders whether they have any concern for the child’s capability to refuse.
