Whenever I'm told about someone dying I really don't know how to respond, other than 'that's sad news'. It seems that religion excels in the area of death. It's too easy to console someone who is in mourning with some reference to heaven , the afterlife, the dead person being in a better place now ...

Read GK Chesterton's great poem 'The Ballad of the Sad Athiest'. It perfectly describes this kind of dreary and austere puritan.

She also can't spell 'atheist' and I can't find any matches in Google for that Chesterton poem ... anyone else know of it?

I for one am am not upset at Christians for sticking their religious ceremony on our Yule/Saturnalia feast, and wish them the best at this time of year. They openly admit that if Christ was born at all, it's very unlikely that it was actually at this time of year and stuck their 'Christ Mass' here b...
