Re: Noahs Ark found

its a fake planted by the group that found it . That is very disappointing. Any one could say that. What kind of gratification could they have gotten by staging this? Think about that for a while. How did that imposing debris field of wooden wreckage at 13,000 feet, partially covered with glacial i...

Re: Questions for Theists

I don't think the detail of the questions actually matter to a theist. They've already signed up to irrationality so they will have no problem being irrational straight back at you. Personally, I've given up arguing directly with theists, it is usually completely fruitless. They don't see or care ab...

Hearing prayer shuts off believers' brain activity

When some religiously devout people hear a charismatic healer speak the word of god , the regions of their brains involved in skeptical thinking and vigilance appear to shut down. Uffe Schjødt of Aarhus University in Denmark and his colleagues scanned the brains of Pentecostalists while they listen...

Re: Why is faith so important?

The distinction between faith and belief is one that partly escapes me I have to admit, the meanings to me at least seem to be largely overlapping, but I take your point well that there is a useful distinction that can be drawn, especially if we take it that faith involves a suspension of rationalit...

Re: Why is faith so important?

I suppose just to clarify, my understanding of the thread topic is about irrational faith. I have faith in many things, but they are rational. I have faith that China exists, for example; despite never having seen it with my own eyes. So in that sense at least, faith is not the antithesis of evidenc...

Re: Why is faith so important?

If you google "why is faith without proof so important?" you get plenty of wishy-washy answers, but I think a believer would really struggle to present an explanation which makes sense. Hopefully some of the believers currently on the forum will chime in? Yeah, this is a really important question, ...

Kids these days ...

Here's a little anecdote for what it's worth. We caught a few neighbour's kids (who we know well), small kids in range about 4-7, running out onto our road - not that busy, but it's still a road. So, we asked them what they thought they were doing and here's how the conversation went (paraphrasing):...

Re: IONA Institute launches ad campaign

So, uhhm, which scientific journal was this published in? This "paper" can largely be boiled down to the following summary: if you're religious, you might have a better chance of having a higher placebo response. And if that is the case, so what? It's bloody obvious. How about spending your research...
