I would agree with Dawkins who suggests that religion itself isn't adaptive, rather, it's a by-product of things which are evolutionarily favourable. There's a good treatment of this in The God Delusion.

It just struck me that I can't think of any openly atheist Irish politicians. We are becoming a more secular society, with fewer people espousing a belief in a personal god or an afterlife, less going to mass etc. But are there any elected politicians in Ireland who profess their atheism openly and ...
