Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

Read this again Between 5 and 10% of homicides are done by Schizophrenics. This may well be true, but considering the fact that the thrust of your argument is: P1. Schizophrenics are dangerous P2. JW's have a 4 fold likelihood of being schizophrenic than the normal population Therefore: JW's should...

Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

I was raised JW and some of my family are still involved. I don't normally find myself defending them, but the sort of nonsense Buzz posted deserves to be challenged. Fair play to you for making it from JW to atheist. From a discussion with someone here in NZ who left the JWs (managing to take her ...

Re: Is she a troll or really that stupid?

I need someone to explain to me why a Poe is regarded as clever or genius. To my mind it is the most feeble and uninspired version of satire there is, so feeble that it does not even deserve the label satire. The reason why I say that is that imitating someone or something so carefully as to be indi...

Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

Great post Derek. You speak as though you know quite a bit about JWs from personal experience. Do you have friends/family who are/were members? While the figures are interesting and invite further study, they can hardly be used to suggest that Jehovah's Witnesses are a danger to the public. Even if ...

Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

I think the points people are making are that: 1). The existence of a higher proportion of people with schizophrenia within the JW population does not prove a causal link, i.e. it doesn't prove that joining the JWs gives you schizophrenia. This is also made clear by most of the people who have carri...

I know. What I meant was, linking those references in your first/original post (instead of just this morning), might have saved some posters from misjudging your intentions.

Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

Hi Buzz,

It might have been a good idea to link the supporting evidence in your first post.

Re: Jehovah's Wittnesses

I have to say Buzz, when I first read your post I thought: "Shit, here goes another crackpot making stuff up off the top of his head." And I felt pretty much the same as the other posters here. But I thought I'd google "Jehovah's witnesses and mental health" first. And it seems you have a point. I c...

Bi-polar is what's sometimes (used to be) called manic depression. Schizophrenia is different, but definitely a clinical mental illness.
