Re: The really truly True Believer™ of the Month Award Aug 2010

Lone voice of reason: Democratic Unionist MP Sammy Wilson says: "Speaking to doctors and nurses in the health service, they do not want more monks, but they want more doctors and nurses to help relieve the pressure that they are under." There's everyday bullshit, and then there's that whole other c...

Re: Homeopathy - NHS knows it's rubbish but offers it anyway

I'd love to know if there is any way to challenge what they pay out for. Probably not as a customer, but perhaps as a shareholder? If you were a shareholder, you would have the right to challenge the directors if you thought they were doing something which was bad for the business - like paying out...

Homeopathy - NHS knows it's rubbish but offers it anyway

The house of commons science & technology committee published this report on homeopathy. Amongst its conclusions: By providing homeopathy on the NHS and allowing MHRA licensing of products which subsequently appear on pharmacy shelves, the Government runs the risk of endorsing homeopathy as an effic...

Re: Questions for Theists

How is your definition of God falsifiable? yep, that's the one I'd focus on, or to put it in more blunt terms... "You believe in a god who is invisible, who doesn't speak openly, who doesn't manifest himself physically in any way that humans can sense. Maybe you're right, but on the other hand you ...

Re: The really truly True Believer™ of the Month Award July 2010

I voted for those scumbags claiming that god gave Hitchens cancer. You have to really, REALLY believe in your deity of choice to think that he'll intervene so directly in an individual's life. And not only that, but you have to really believe you know your god's mind to go around asserting that a pa...

British government tries to protect the pope from arrest

The British government is apparently planning to move the goalposts in order to foil any attempt to have Herr Ratzinger arrested during his "state" visit to the UK in September: http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100722/tuk-pope-to-be-protected-from-arrest-on-45dbed5.html Now Justice Secretary Ken Clarke ...

Re: Europe puts us at the special table

Should we feel insulted because: a) They don't think we're good enough to be lumped in with the mainstream dress-wearers b) They think we're on a par with the nipple-baring funny handshake fellas c) a + b Frankly I don't know why the EU feels the need to meet in an official way on a regular basis wi...

Re: Councillor in hot water over "stupid scientology" tweet

The legal blogger Jack of Kent has written a piece on this case here: http://jackofkent.blogspot.com/2010/07/meaning-of-stupidscientology.html Very interesting article. I particularly liked this quote from Mr. Justice Latey's 1984 high court judgement: "Scientology is both immoral and socially obno...

Councillor in hot water over "stupid scientology" tweet

Welsh Lib Dem councillor John Dixon is faced with suspension over a Twitter post where he suggested that scientology was stupid: On a visit to London, to buy a wedding ring, the Liberal Democrat councillor tweeted: "I didn't know the Scientologists had a church on Tottenham Court Road. Just hurried ...
