Re: Socialism And All That Jazz

When I was in my late teens/early twenties I would have had a more traditional socialist outlook, in that I would have been in favour of more extensive nationalisation etc. Essentially I supported the idea of a strong state as a guarantor against the excesses of individual greed. However, as I have ...

Re: The Majesty of Science

P.S. If your in anyway interested in space I recommend "The Wonders of The Solar System" with Brian Cox on Sundays on the Beeb (can't remember 1 or 2). That's where I learned how to measure the energy output of a star without leaving the garden. Yep - have the first couple of episodes downloaded fr...

Re: The Majesty of Science

The thing that regularly boggles my mind (every evening when out walking the dog and I look up at the night sky) is the fact that I'm looking at the distant past. I'm seeing a picture of our little corner of the universe as it was hundreds or even thousands of years ago. The stars I'm looking at mig...

Re: Nuremburg defence

I heard Brady being interviewed on Radio Ulster whilst driving to work this morning - it's a wonder I didn't cause an accident I was that angry listening to him  The man's arrogance and sheer indifference to the consequences of what he did (or rather didn't do) were revolting. Nuremberg defenc...

Re: When and why did you go public about your disbelief in god?

I went for 5. As a child, I was never particularly religious but I wasn't particularly questioning of it either. Then, at the age of about 13/14, I had a personal experience which gave me cause to start thinking. Once I did, I rapidly came to the conclusion that theistic belief was just a form of wi...

Re: Debate: Peter Atkins & John Waters - UCC Atheists - Feb 16

Sorry to be pedantic, but shouldn't the title of the debate read "compl e ment" rather than "compl i ment"? As in "Religion and science - don't go together or go together" rather than "Religion and science - don't go together or they say nice things to each other"? Apologies if I have misconstrued t...

New Zealand vicar with a sense of humour...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/8417963.stm An unholy row has broken out in New Zealand over a church billboard aimed at "challenging stereotypes" about the birth of Jesus Christ. A dejected-looking Joseph lies in bed next to Mary under the caption, "Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to...

Re: Non religious options for Atheist Memorials

Personally I'd prefer cremation when the time comes. I don't like the thought of leaving a grave in case it became a focus for grieving or moping amongst family & friends. Once I'm dead I want whoever I leave behind to get on with their lives and not feel obliged to visit some piece of stone or be g...
