Re: Discussion Paper on school enrollments

Catholic schools are the same worldwide in that they discriminate and do not treat minorities as equal. Discrimination is part of a Catholic ethos. One of the missions of the Catholic Church is to evangelise so this is what Catholic Schools do. We live in a Country that provides for the education of...

Re: Religion is school

I am delighted to hear this and well done. I did notice this year that we are not getting so many complaints and I have put it down to the template letter on Teach, don't preach.

I'm away for a couple of days this week but will look at this in detail when I get back. I will move it into the members area as well.

Re: Junior Certificate Religeous Education Exam

I'm very open to discussing this in detail as given the complaints we get from parents there is obviously a lot to be done to help them. As this may involve spending money it must be looked at very carefully. I can ask for it to be put on the agenda for the next meeting of the Committee. I would rea...

Re: Junior Certificate Religeous Education Exam

After a lot of trouble and consternation one of our children was removed from the religion class on the grounds that she was doing her homework when she should have been studying other suitable material. We had already opted her out of formal participation in the class. The choice we had up to this ...

Re: Parachuting Priests

I’m afraid Ruairi Quinn cannot do a thing about this. This funding for Chaplains was the subject of a Supreme Court case in 1998 – Campaign to Separate Church and State v Minister for Education. The Supreme Court found that this funding was not unconstitutional. This was for Community and Comprehens...

Re: Parachuting Priests

Well done Gavin, great letter. As far as I can make out there are about 250 Chaplains funded by the state in second level Community Schools and designated Community Colleges. These people are paid the equivalent of a teacher's salary. The Government are cutting special needs assistants for children ...

Re: Exempt Letter to teacher?

There is an issue with a school refusing to permit a student to do their homework in this class. For example there are many children that have an exemption for Irish or it could be PE. What is the school policy for these classes. Do they make the student study another language if they are opted out ...

Re: Junior Certificate Religeous Education Exam

Atheist Ireland has already made a formal written complaint to the Dept of Education and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment on the RE Course at Second Level. The complaint was made to the previous Minister and we got an acknowledgement but nothing else. The NCCA replied and we got in...
