Creating a secular society in itself is not enough. Ataturk separated the Turkish state from religion back in the 1920's and 1930's. In a way he did it too quickly, the people didn't have time to adjust and still haven't fully adjusted. (Of course if he waited for them to adjust it may never have ha...

I'm from Dublin but have been living in Turkey for seven years at this stage. The Irish Times seems fairly ok about Ergenekon, doesn't want to stand on any toes. Ergenekon is seen as being an effort to rout out any nationalist who doesn't like the current administration. My guess is that in a countr...

Alas the Turkish courts don't need Oktar to turn them into a joke. The largest case ever tried, Ergenekon, started on Monday. There are 88 defendants in the case, some held in custody, others not. Some of those defendants have up to 10 lawyers (it's the case I mentioned in an earlier post). So betwe...

There's no such thing as bad publicity!

He's done it again. This time Oktar has managed to get a ban on the Educator's union website (www.egitimsen.org). there was a rather shrill man on CNNTurk shouting about it last night.

The ban is a DNS ban enforced by the ISP's. Get the right DNS number and the ban vanishes. This is why people aren't protesting about the bans as much as they should.

Annoying but typically Turkish!

Free speech, eh, what's that??? At the moment people who have criticised the present government are being arrested for being part of a thing called Ergenekon. These include journalists, media personalities, actors, ex-army generals, ex-police chiefs, businessmen, lawyers and ex-university rectors. E...

What part of the country are you going too? Down south it can get pretty hot!! (I'm in the northwest and 30 degrees+ is more than enough for me!) Factor 30 would be ok for short periods of time, but F60 would of course be better. Depends on whether you're aiming for a tan or not. I've been wearing F...
