What with all the piety in the media about Martin, it was refreshing to see this. He is a spluttering mess trying to answer when pressed.

Wow, on Primetime they only showed a snippet of this. Nice one.
Human communication is a very rickety rope bridge between minds. Its too narrow to allow but a few thoughts to cross at a time. Many are lost in the chasms of noise, suspicion, misinterpretation and shooting the message through dislike of the messenger.

Fantastic. She has a point though such people have no right to use such titles in a moral capacity.

"Renounce your pomp"..... great quote!

Did RTE air this as well as TV3 I wonder? It doesnt seem very RTE viewer-friendly to me.

Nell has a very good point here to be made.
When addressing someone as your grace or your eminence, etc.... it automatically gives them an air of "grace", excuse the pun. So it disarms the person addressing them (sort of disarms their suspicion of the person receiving the title).

On a more worrying note, given the rape of children perpetrated by some with this titles, is the use of the word "father" to address a Catholic priest. Being brought up be parents who I trusted as a child (and still do), there were two words that I addressed the people I trusted most in the world, "mother" and "father".
Now, if my parents told me as a child to address someone else as "father", this would in turn make me trust that person.

So I think in light of the Catholic church inability to self reform, and the states inability to enforce reform, the use of the term "father" is at best wholy (or is that holy) inappropriate, and more likely very very dangerous.

Nell McCafferty, like so many Irish people, makes the mistake of forgetting that the only reason why a child would be reverential towards the clergy (priest or nun) is because the parents of such children are brainwashed Catholics, et al, themselves.

Therefore, whilst her attack on Diarmuid Martin is valid, Nell McCafferty would do well to begin her soul-searching with her own mother.

Alexis, I've corrected you before on your use of i.e., not to be a dick but you aren't using et al correctly either. Et al - is read as and others e.g.
"The blasphemy law has been opposed by Michael Nugent, Yern, BeeBub et al."

It is used similarly as et cetera.

Thus, your sentence reads as: Parents of such children are brainwashed Catholics, and others, themselves.

Surely this doesn't sound right to you, does it?

I don't correct anyone else on this forum but I always find it hilariously difficult to correctly interpret your posts please put more effort in to your proof reading. On a side note I don't get your last sentence. Nell McCafferty is soul searching and your suggestion to her is to start with her mother? How did you possibly conjure this in your head after watching the posted video?

How is that the only reason?
I'm sure there are children not of catholic parents who become brainwashed towards catholicism, and also children of catholic parents who do not.

Surely there are many many reasons why a child would be reverential towards the clergy, and many many reasons why a chiild would not be reverential towards the clergy. I think simply blaming parents is a vast vast oversimplificaiton.

For example, take a child of catholic parents, brought up in a non christian state, where the majority of their friends are non christian, surely they would be subject to different peer pressure etc... than a child of catholic parents brought up in Christian state.
