Tax-evading priest slams Revenue

Senior church officials in the diocese of Cloyne are to meet later this morning after a priest in the diocese reportedly branded Revenue Officials 'the biggest showers of bastards on the planet'.

The comments were carried in an article in today's Irish Star. Fr Tadhg O'Donovan is curate in the parish of Whitechurch and a convicted tax evader.

Fr O'Donovan is said to have made the comments to the newspaper after yesterday's publication of his name on a list 76 tax defaulters.

It showed that he had made a settlement of €433,475 with the Revenue Commissioners.

In March 2008, Fr O'Donovan was fined €6,000 at Cork District Court on ten charges relating to his tax affairs - after agreeing a separate €213,000 settlement with the Revenue Commissioners.

A diocesan spokesman, Fr Will Bermingham, said he had read the content of the article in today's Irish Daily Star to the administrator of the Diocese of Cloyne, the Archbishop of Cashel and Emily, Dr Dermot Clifford, earlier this morning.

Dr Clifford, he said, is taking it extremely seriously.

The Archbishop, together with Fr Bermingham, and two other senior church officials, including a canon solicitor, are due to meet at 11am.

A statement is expected to be issued later this afternoon.
As if saying not prosecuting kiddie fiddlers isn't bad enough, now they say that the Revenue is evil!

How the f*&k does a CCL cleric end up having so much money he owes neary half a million in tax?

Over the years there have always been individual CCL clerics who seemed to have a talent for the dosh. There was one strange case I barely remember where a CCL cleric got murdered in a racehorse owners house (or somethin' like that). On the grapvine it was said he was having it off with the trainers missus. The cleric had shares in a dozen race horses. The old story when you'd see one of them driving a Saab or a BMW was always "his family bought it for him".

A priest rapes a child and it takes them decades to do anything about it. A priest utters a few naughty words and church officials pounce on him immediately. Nice to see where their priorities lie.

Also worth noting is that if the church paid their fair share of taxes, this guy probably wouldn't have that level of tax burden and nor would the rest of us.

Thanks GT. As I remember it at the time the CCL did not want the truth to come out about the horse racing cleric.

 This was black and white dog collar crime!

The guy was filmed on the news tonight. A shiftier lookin' character ya never saw. I didn’t notice him wearing a dog collar. They didn’t bother to go into exactly what he does to generate that kind of money. Maybe he's trafficking nuns or selling indulgences!
