this seems more like it, didn't know he was that involved in it, does he read the threads?, surely hes had years of insult.

Because the moderators cant succesfully just make a thread named MINDLES BANTER BETWEEN LIKE MINDED PEOPLE HERE PLEASE and tell the mindlessbantering people to post only there.

People who banter mindless will seldom aknowledge it, an when they do they will mostly not want to be restricted to one thread. So them all will still post all over the forum disturbing the real cultivated threads  Yes

It’s disgraceful if what
http://heathen-hub.com/blog.php?b=242
and
http://realityismyreligion.wordpress.co ... comment-89
says is true.

aside - regarding
http://heathen-hub.com/blog.php?b=215
Most observers won't easily forget how one atheist with Histrionic Personality Disorder and what looks like under-medicated bipolar syndrome manipulated her way onto the governing committee of the then-largest atheist board on the net, then tried taking it over, and eventually with a bit of help from other extremists tried destroying the board just to suit her narcissism. She was finally thrown out, like she had also been thrown out of other atheist groups, but not before doing one hell of a lot of damage. Those that enabled her certainly did not seem to learn much from it.
Anyone know what/whom he’s on about?

From your link>
When you have to ban someone from a board, you do not delete their entire user account. That is extremely silly, and leads to very badly mucked-up threads.
Someone could tell that too to friend hibernicus at irish catholics forum
The RD forum is not the only atheist forum to go through disturbing times >
The raving atheist forum
at the end of 2008 also had to cope with the surprise that its founder, the original RAVING ATHEIST became a XIAN

It's Official: Raving Atheist turns into Raving Theist!

Angelo visited that forum not long before that > so it must be his work

Is the forum gone? – For real? – never posted on it myself – but still it seemed like a vibrant community. It seems a pity to reduce it to a post and comment mentality.

If it's such a big problem then how do we manage to do exactly that right here. Forum members can submit articles to a moderator which may or may not be published on the site. People can engage in discussion about the articles and that discussion can be moderated. Then the open forum we banter like you and I are right now.

A good question Biped, but I suspect that with the vast numbers involved in Dicky's forum, it may have just got uncontrollable. I'm sure he didn't make the decision overnight, and it must have been building up for a while. AI on the other hand has far less media exposure than RDF, thus the problem is more easily controlled.

Well at least that's my twopence on the situation!!!

Closing down the forum seems a bit harsh but I guess it is his forum; free speech does not exist in a private domain.

People are really going of on a tangent saying how this implicates RD in double standards and other general naysaying. I don't know what this incident says about RD but whatever it says isn't worth one sentence of his actual opinion and I'll naturally suspend judgement.

Biped hit the nail on the head with his comments regarding what RDF was and what RD intended it to be (a place for intellectual discussion).

EDIT: Comment withdrawn.
“It is a community, and that is a valuable part of it. Many of our forum threads have an atmosphere of friends going out for a drink and chatting. I think that is valuable, and I don’t think we should insist on sticking to serious topics. That would be a good way to stifle the sense of community, and that would be a real shame.” - Richard Dawkins on RDF
How will this effect AI? I expect AI to pick up a few new UK forum members.

Having now read both sides of the story, I think what has actually happened is Timonen and co have implemented a small picture solution to a technical problem.

The small picture problem is that the forum is overloaded and running slowly. The big picture problem is that we need a community where Atheists can contact each other, bounce ideas off each other, organise and encourage each other to come out of the closet.

Timonen has come up with a solution that will reduce traffic and the need for so many resources but ignores the big picture. This happens a lot in IT circles. Us techies often need a kick in the pants to remind us of the bigger picture when we can't see the forest for the trees.

The Big picture solution would have been to spend a bit of money and time on another server to deal with the increased demand.

This reminds me of an M50 solution that was touted by the gov. a few years back. Oh the M50 can't deal with the traffic demand, lets line it with tolls. Or the DAA's solution to the short term car park being too small, "lets increase the price of parking by 40%".

As for the accusations of cover ups and treating the moderators poorly, It's Josh's word against that of the mods. They claim to have sent evidence to Dawkins so lets leave it at that. Innocent until proven guilty IMO.

Maybe the title of this thread could also be corrected - his 'tirade' was not against his fans.
