Vatican document to damage ecumenism

Wednesday, 11 July 2007 08:08

The Vatican said yesterday that Christian denominations outside Roman Catholicism are not full churches of Jesus Christ.

Protestant leaders said this was offensive and would hurt inter-denominational dialogue.

A 16-page document by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which Pope Benedict once headed, describes Christian Orthodox churches as true churches, but suffering from a 'wound', since they do not recognise the primacy of the Pope.

The document's central claim, that only the Catholic Church is 'the one true Church of Christ', is likely to revive a debate which has dogged the Vatican's relationship with other Christian denominations for decades.

Such faiths, the Protestant and Orthodox churches, 'lack elements considered essential to the Catholic Church,' it says.

But the document says the 'wound is still more profound' in Protestant denominations.

'Despite the fact that this teaching has created no little distress ... it is nevertheless difficult to see how the title of 'Church' could possibly be attributed to them,' it says.

The document is the Pope's second strong reaffirmation of Catholic tradition in four days, following a decree last Saturday restoring the old Latin Mass alongside the modern liturgy.

A little boy prayed for a bike. Then he realised God doesn't work that way so he stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

Off topic, but a bit of good news I think.
Dear Alan,

DefCon Poll Shows Rift in Religious Right

The new anti-science Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, has nothing of value to teach about the development of life on Earth -- but that doesn't mean we haven't learned anything from it.

A new poll released by DefCon reveals the enormous schism within the religious right represented by the museum. The poll shows that 95% of Evangelicals reject the Creation Musuem's strange, dino-friendly version of Creationism. In addition, only 10% of self-identified Evangelicals support Intelligent Design. While religious right leaders like James Dobson lump all forms of anti-evolution together, the new Creation Museum is showing us just how deeply divided the religious right really is.

Before it was all christian religions are valid, even if we ocassionaly kill each other over subtle differences. Now the Pope has said most of them are, shit!
All we have to do now is wait for him to realize that his own is shit. He managed to release himself from the doctrine of the nazi's.

I think this may be an own goal for the vatican, they should have got another goalkeeper. He is traditional in a time when he should be trying to modernise the church to allow it to continue. He should be trying to draw other religions into support their own beliefs. Religion is losing it's grip in Europe, we are becoming more secular.

All hail Ratzenberger, he's taken them down by being the best god damn pope he can be. Can't wait the spainish enquistion to be braught back.
