Motion: Is religion a force for peace or conflict in the modern world?
When: Friday, Nov. 26

I'd like to see this, I'll try to update after the debate with a video which is nearly six weeks away.

I want love to see how Blair would argues it is a force of peace.

Maybe we get an inside in how much religion was a part of his decision making.
Pope says atheists pick & choose their morals. Correct. Today I will be frowning on child abuse & not having a problem with homosexuality.

Hitchens is under going chemotherapy, on meds and is dying. Playing field is somewhat level than would be otherwise. :)

Nah, both speakers have huge profiles and this debate will draw a lot of attention. Politicians almost never debate academics.

we come in peace......shoot to kill -star treking
After 2000 years the holy land should be the most peaceful place on the planet...instead one of the bloodyist. How many has died every century there. On that alone religion is an utter failure.

I use to have a high regard of Blair.

Killing in the name of......

I hope it goes well. I watched a debate Hitchens did a couple of weeks ago. As usual he did much better than his opponent who was very weak (though he started really well I have to admit, to the point I was STARTING to think he might be the best I have seen up against hitchens, he just went quickly downhill from there.)

Hitchens however was showing signs of losing his train of thought. It was not hugely apparent but having watched a few of his debates before I was able to identify where two of his arguments ran into each other in ways that made no sense and at one point one of his responses was not really relevant to what he was asked in any way. It was a bit worrying and I was wondering how much his illness had to do with it or was it just a bad day.

I guess we will see in the next debate though!

Then again, the man seems to be a non stop debating machine:

Considering Tony Blair wants to "unite" Christians and Muslims to combat what he calls "extremist secularism" this debate should be fun. Blair has really shown his true colours since he left political office. His role as peace envoy while being responsible for a war and leader of a crazy international religious organization is the greatest joke of modern times.
