Barraso and Ahern agree to continue religious discrimnation

Post by lostexpectation » Fri Apr 18, 2008 11:44 am

Headline on newstalk this morning that after talking with ahern barroso has promised that ireland won't be taken to court over trying to keep the option of choosing the ethos of teachers etc in schools, said other measures would be made.

the sooner ahern goes the better.

newstalk paint it as way the eu is trying to encourage you to vote yes, but the lack of prosecution on this matter or our eco failings would make me even less likely to vote yes.

Annoying how the commission can make this decision for political reasons. Can they reverse it after Lisbon? Would they? Can someone else sue instead (say a teacher refused employment obviously because of his or her religion)?

The EU won't intervene as it is seen as a matter of Irish national sovereignty.

If you want it changed, vote for Europe. France loves it's separation of church and state.

does our opt out on this go after lisbon passes?, without reading up on this again ,i don't think so, i think the court decided it couldn't overrule us on this anyway, but ultimately i think this will be over ruled by the high court at some point whether lisbon passes (this time) or not.

We would indeed lose it.

Only economic and defence areas have a veto after Lisbon as far as I can tell.

so in a couple of months it will be gone, so why did barraso say it won't a change that's the whole point of this thread.

To reassure Biffo no doubt. Fianna Fail are a populist party, and do not want a confrontation with the school management boards. With Lisbon, they can argue it isn't their fault and bring in the reforms needed.
