The blasphemy law has now been passed in the Dail, as part of Defamation Act, with no debate on the blasphemy amendments.

The debate was restricted to an hour (for the full Defamation Bill).

Ahern said extending time for the blasphemy amendments would be regurgitating what has been discussed ad nauseum.

There was an average of six TDs in the Dail during debate.

The law now only has to pass through Seanad before being signed into law by President.

It is scheduled for 10.30 am tomorrow morning in the Seanad.

Thanks for the update. My campaigning of TDs and the Justice committee did little I guess. How much was this passed by?

It was hard to tell from the public gallery. Ciaran Mac Aoidh and I were there.

There were only about six TDs in the chamber. They were voting on the overall Defamation Bill, which included the blasphemy section.

FF obviously voted for it. It seemed as if SF voted against. We're not sure what FG and Lab did, but they may have abstained or even voted for - we'll have to wait for the Dail record (or just ask them).

Frankly, the whole debate and voting process was a charade.

Only 1 hour to discuss 33 amendments, only nine of them reached and most of those withdrawn, blasphemy amendments were nos 22 to 26 and were not even reached.

Ciaran and I will give a full report of it at the meeting on Saturday.
