Cardinal criticises Civil Partnership Bill
Saturday, 22 August 2009 22:10

The legislation which gives statutory partnership rights to gay and lesbian couples has been criticised by Cardinal Sean Brady.

Speaking at St John's Cathedral in Limerick, the Primate of All Ireland said the measures would hugely change peoples' concepts of the family.

The Civil Partnership Bill, which was published in June, will for the first time mean that same sex couples will be recognised as partners before the law and will be treated like married couples for tax and social welfare when registered.

Cardinal Brady also said those who refuse to officiate at a same sex wedding would be guilty of offence and described this as 'an alarming attack on the fundamental principle of freedom of religion and conscience.'

Assuming he's referring to civil registrars, the public servants who would would be tasked with administering same-sex partnership registrations (as the Bill doesn't provide for same-sex marriages), I wonder if he believes those same officials should be entitled to refuse to officiate at civil marriages of individuals who were previously divorced, which wouldn't be recognised by the Catholic Church.

If not, it would be fair to say that Brady is

(i) hypocritical
(ii) scaremongering
(iii) a homophobic bigot
(iv) all of the above.

CARDINAL Sean Brady has warned legislators that they are directly challenging the constitutional protection for the family and leaving registrars of marriage open to prosecution by planning to introduce civil partnership for gay and lesbian couples.

He said the people of Ireland would soon have to choose to "stand clearly on the side of Christ or depart from him".

The cardinal claimed that "what the Government is planning will hugely change people's concept of the family. Nevertheless, marriage between a man and a woman will always remain the ideal environment in which to raise children.

"Any government that undermines such an environment could hardly be said to be promoting the common good".

He said that during the next Dail term politicians and citizens will be asked to make a fundamental choice about the future of marriage and the family in Ireland.

"They will be asked to approve legislation and policy which, among other things, will make same-sex partnerships equal in status to marriage, with the same benefits in tax and welfare as married couples -- the only difference being the right to adopt-- will give cohabiting same-sex, or opposite-sex, partners the same status as marriage, after they have lived together for a short period, will remove 'marital status' from key legislation and public documentation and replace it with 'civil status', thus directly challenging the constitutional recognition that marriage is 'a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law'."

Cardinal Brady claimed that any Registrar of Marriage who, in conscience, declines to officiate at same-sex 'weddings', will be guilty of an offence.

- Willie Kealy

read what he's talking about here it goes way beyond gay marriage into the area of childrens rights in regard to parents and the states rights.

marriage is 'a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law'."

but there it is in the constitution
Quote:
Article 41.1.1

The State recognises the Family as the natural primary and fundamental unit group of Society, and as a moral institution possessing inalienable and imprescriptible rights, antecedent and superior to all positive law.

Article 41.3.1

The State pledges itself to guard with special care the institution of Marriage, on which the Family is founded, and to protect it against attack.

don't we something wonders whether morals exist, he seems suggesting the church has special say in how we regulate marriage, on how we as country collectively decide our morals.

morals change...

I guess he arguing that if we were to change marriage we need a referendum but he 's not looking for referendum

there also called natural rights
