If I wanted to buy 60 seconds of advertising on RTE radio and television, to be broadcast at precisely midday and 6pm respectively, I imagine I'd need Denis O'Brien depth pockets to be able to afford it. Yet our state broadcaster broadcasts these bongs for free twice a day, in prime time slots. The arguments for and against the Angelus on RTE are well worn and we'll get nowhere rehashing them here. So, here's my idea. Let the Catholic Church and/or whoever else feels strongly enough on the issue pay to keep the Angelus on air. It would be a good source of revenue for RTE and us atheists would no longer have to get all worked up about state-sponsored religious propaganda in a secular society, etc. If the Holy Joes can't stump up the dosh, the Angelus ain't on anymore. This could be an opportunity for god-friendly businesses too, as the Angelus would undoubtedly need sponsors.

What do you think?

I agree - our state should be secular and since RTE is a state broadcasting channel it should follow it's also secular. i.e. it doesn't promote one religion over another.

This would be great - it would make for all sorts of bizarre matchups...

"The angelus - brought to you by Durex"
or
"The angelus - brought to you by Guinness", there could be shots of people supping pints and staring off into the distance as the bells ring, as everyone thinks of god, i.e. "god I could fucking murder a pint..."

If the angelus were sponsored, there'd be cries of "blasphemy!"

At the AGM, removel of the Angelus from RTE is one of the campaigns for this year, can we come up with a todo list on this.
Maybe have one person heading this, to pull in resorces (links to sites monitor other site threads) and gather info and organise action to be taken.

I can start work on a video for this.

Anyone remember "MailBag" - Bring it back and complain about the repeats on RTE.

RTE's Mission wrote:
Nurture and reflect the cultural and
regional diversity of all the people of Ireland

and BONG achieves this how??

RTE's Mission wrote:
Provide distinctive programming and services of the highest
quality and ambition, with the emphasis on home production

In fairness BONG is very overproduced, considering it's content.

RTE's Mission wrote:
Inform the Irish public by delivering the best comprehensive
independent news service possible

But why does it have to start with BONG?

RTE's Mission wrote:
Enable national participation in all events

It was kinda nice when there were loads of members of the public in BONG but now there is some sap doing graffiti on the pavement

That's my audition to be the next Angeles guy

I've been doing a bit of number crunching, and the price of a single advert around the 6.1News would come to approx €6,320, supposing you could fit 3 or 4 adverts into a 60 second slot, RTE (Television) is losing about €25,000 per night

These are however based on estimates and I arrived at my figures from making an average of CPT on this page in the general adult category
http://tvsales.rte.ie/downloads/2010fix ... evised.pdf

I then multiplied it by the viewership of 6.1 News Top 20 Programs for 09
http://tvsales.rte.ie/insights/topprogrammes.htm#03

I only have little knowlege of advertising pricing methods, if anyone can do better please revise my figures.

Cheers

What do you think?

The Angelus is brought to you by "Atheist Ireland" tired of ignoring these bongs visit atheist.ie
Or make half the bongs and the other some chants from other religions, or even another religious prayer to the tone of the bongs, I think people would ask for it to be removed straight away.

Or The Angelus brought to you by "Psyhics Ireland"

I've emailed the sales dept. at RTÉ asking for pricing for the slot for Summer and Winter schedules, weekdays and weekend. Won't be perfect but going through all the bank holiday, christmas and easter rates at this stage seemed a bit over the top. Hopefully they answer and don't get silly about it.
