New York Times: Last summer, there was talk of a plan to divest the church of its control of state-financed schools, but when I asked a Department of Education and Skills spokeswoman last month what the department was doing, she gave me only the Catholic Church’s current position — that there is need for “reflection” on the issue — and actually referred me to the church for further information.

Will our new Minister for Education be able or willing to remove the Church moles from the Department?
There's an interesting debate on the topic at politicalworld.org

My Mother often tells me that I'm far too cynical for a youth, but alas, I think not. There is something awfully parasitic about how the Church props itself up, isn't there? Anything to keep power, of course. The article really has it right when it says that our economic issues have essentially diverted people away from the Church's monopoly on education. It doesn't seem likely that the new government will push to remove any Church influences, at least to me.

If the new government is FG/Labour and Labour gets the Dept of Ed, we might have a chance.

Sadly, i read today that Quinn might not get a cabinet post due to geographical concerns and that he might be up for the next EU commissioner. This would be a blow.

Ruairi was interviewed on Today with Pat Kenny this morning. There was some discussion of third-level fees, Irish language and other education issues, and general party & government issues, but no discussion of education & secularism. :(
