Turkish Schools must allow more religious tolerance:EUCourt

Post by lostexpectation » Mon Oct 15, 2007 6:41 pm

Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Turkey needs to ensure that religious education in schools is objective and gives additional weight to beliefs other than Sunni Islam, the European Court of Human Rights ruled today.

Hasan Zengin and his daughter Eylem, followers of the Alevi faith, argued the religious culture and ethics classes in Turkey weren't neutral and were incompatible with the country's secular system. The family's request for Eylem to be exempt from the classes was rejected, a decision upheld by national courts.

You mean, when the Irish system falls - right after the collapse of the American economy?
Eternity is a very long time, especially towards the end.

Sorry, this is a bit off-topic, but it's a bee in the bonnet for me. The European Court of Human Rights has nothing to do with the European Union. It's a Council of Europe institutions, and the CoE has a much wider membership than the EU.
