ESRI report shows considerably diversity in education and attitudes towards education between students and schools: Irish Times, RTE News

Apparently:
Quote:
Girls spend more time in school learning religion while boys focus more on history, geography and physical education, a new study has found.

I know guys that are plenty superstitious. Maybe not so much into those things you've mentioned but rather things like ghosts, stepping on cracks, curses, faith healers and even goblins (not joking).

Wow look at the linguistic contortions they'll go to to use the word "diversity" in an article about one of the most segregated school systems in the developed world.

Quote:

Sometimes it feels like it. But in case you're having the same trouble with goblins, apparently leaving a glass of water on the landing deters them.

@ bipedalhumanoid: I think that was just me that used the word 'diversity'. I didn't mean it in the sense of culture or ethnicity. Maybe I should have avoided using that word in this case.

One point is at least they are identifying that statistically boys and girls are better at different subjects and activities. Accordingly, when it comes to careers I think that people should simply pursue what they want and use their strengths.
It's ridiculous, for example, the effort universities go to to try and get girls to sign up for courses like Engineering, Maths and Science. They even offer grants (giving away money, laptops, mentorship, etc.) to girls and not boys. It's gender discrimination, demeaning to the girls and blurs the actual endeavour which is placing people into the right career paths.

i have to say that I work in third level education in the science area and the female to male ratio is fairly even at post grad level and if anything the females were in a majority at undergraduate level . also if you look at the gold medal and scholarship winners it seems fairly even as well ,in my own line -chemistry (big surprise) i have found the female students to me more diligent and usually submit the best work .

do "womens studies"/ nursing type courses give blokes incentives to join up? - free beer, football tickets ,rugby world cup jerseys etc :D

I'm in Engineering. Undergraduate level is still predominantly male. Postgraduate level is more even, but still more guys.

I can't find the name of the scholarship I'm referring to - it sticks in my mind because it enraged a female postgrad colleague of mine who made a lot of good points about why it was wrong.

I find that the female engineering postgrads are extremely diligent and capable and for me represent those who have found their way without having to be lured by money and trinkets.

sounds like a good course, where do I sign up!

My boyfriend works in a hospital laboratory and for he did his degree in a combination of biology, chemistry and medical science - not only was his class made up of 8 men and 42 women, and his current workplace is dominated by women.

I always thought it was kind of peculiar. Not that I'm not happy about more women choosing a scientific career, but because it is so opposite of what you find in most areas of science education and work.

i guess maternity leave/babies /carers etc and all that that implies tends to stunt a lot of women's careers after a certain point.

The childcare cost will be a factor also (as chemicals already mentioned). I know a few woman here that cannot afford the childcare in summer holidays and had to quite their jobs as result.
