This is an absolute disgrace. I recommend that the police be called in immediately to investigate this situation. Someone must really have it in for this poor priest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He was so distressed he deleted all the images immediately from his laptop. Also, whoever did this outrage had the neck to subsequently come back to the church and rob the laptop. There really are some unscrupulous people out there;) I feel the full weight of the law should be brought in to assist this priest in retrieving his laptop.

Priest issues apology for displaying gay porn images
A Catholic priest from Co Tyrone who "inadvertently" displayed gay pornographic images to a group of parents and a child has issued an unreserved apology.

The images were shown on a screen by Fr Martin McVeigh, the parish priest of Pomeroy, during a PowerPoint presentation at St Mary’s Primary School about children’s first Confession on March 26th

In a statement today, Fr McVeigh said he “deeply” regrets his failure to check his presentation in advance.

“I had no knowledge of any offending imagery existing in it. After the images were inadvertently shown, I immediately removed the memory stick from the laptop,” he said. “In my shock and upset and in my concern to ensure that the images would never be shown again, I destroyed it later that evening.”

There was no suggestion that the images were of minors or illegal.

Fr McVeigh said he accepts the incident was very serious and caused much anxiety and distress.

“I apologise unreservedly for the hurt caused. I want to assure you, however, that I was not responsible for the presence of the offending images and in this respect I ask you to accept my innocence.”

Fr McVeigh said he has asked the Archbishop of Armagh, Cardinal Seán Brady, for permission to leave the parish and take sabbatical leave. “The memory of this awful episode will remain with me for the rest of my life,” he said

In a statement, Dr Brady said he had agreed to the request “on the understanding that he will, on its completion, return to the diocese”.

He also apologised for the incident, which he described as “traumatic” for both the parish and for Fr McVeigh.

Since the incident, the laptop in question has been reported stolen from Fr McVeigh’s house. The PSNI have appealed to the public for information to help establish the circumstances behind the theft.

Dr Brady said two other computers in the sacristy and computer equipment in the parish office and Fr McVeigh’s parochial house had been examined as part of a diocesan inquiry. “These have been forensically examined by an independent technical expert and no inappropriate imagery has been found,” he said.

It's a shame he went through such effort to destroy the USB key. The article provides nothing in the way of technical information which is relevant. I don't understand whether the image came from a browser pop up or some malware or whether a person interfered with the machine to cause embarrassment to the priest. The USB key could have redeemed him as the image file if located on the usb would have information on it such as date created, date modified, the program that created it and possibly information about it's original source.

Seems like a very odd story.

A burglar broke into my house once and left a Playboy magazine under the mattress. Honest!

It's pretty clear why he destroyed. It's also pretty clear why,

Not really. Gay priest looks at gay porn on 'tinternet. It gets on to his memory stick somehow and he accidentally shows it at a communion meeting. He destroys the memory stick. His laptop gets 'stolen'.

He stands aside while it's investigated. Brady says nothing was found in the investigation (because his laptop was 'stolen') and says he'll return to some duties in the parish. Parishioners have a mickey fit and he goes on 'sabbatical'.

It's a little sad really. He was stupid to have mistakenly shown these images at a communion meeting and I'm sure people were offended. Apart from that he's not done much wrong. (Aside from leaving his laptop in a place where it was liable to be 'robbed'! :D)

This does make it a lot more suspicious.

& after some careful investigation I assume. At least it wasn't hetro-porn else he would never live it up

awwhhh one day you will laugh about it, remember the day you showed a porn presentation to your parish.

 & everything returns back to normal.

errm isn't there something else ever so slightly more ''traumatic'' that Fr/Dr. Bradys' Church should be apologising for.

Thing is it's not a crime (apart from slipping up and showing the wrong power point 'first confessions' instead of 'first confession' presentation to a family) let the poor fellow have his bit of porn once it's legal, not like his allowed to share his life with a partner.

I find this farcical. Was there a complaint lodged with the Garda Síochána? If so, has the priest been charged with destroying evidence? And when was the priest's computer reported missing?

But he didn't do anything wrong and definitely nothing illegal.
He may have been guilty of having double standards but that's normal for priests.

You're probably right, but surely there's a law against showing pornographic images to minors? In this case, I think I read that there was at least one child in the room. I doubt very much that anyone would make a formal complaint and even then I'm not sure he'd be prosecuted as it was accidental. In this case it would be very hard to prove that he did it in purpose.

So assuming no formal complaint was made to the police there should be no need to investigate his destorying of evidence.

In fairness to Brady (he has enough stick of his own at present), I think initially the idea was that the priest would take some time off and come back to the parish to continue his work, but the locals had a shit fit. It was then changed to a 'sabbatical'.

If I was sending my kid for communion etc. it wouldn't bother me that the priest looking after it looked at gay porn on the internet.
