1. No personal attacks and baiting
In order to maintain a positive atmosphere, deliberate personal attacks, baiting or insults will not be tolerated. While discussions may become heated, it is not an excuse to resort to attacks or insults. There is a difference between a passionate, respectful discussion and one that delves into personal matters. Think of it as debating issues, not individuals. When the line is crossed, the discussion may be closed by the moderation team. Violators will be warned and potentially banned.
2. Assume good faith
Assume good faith. When replying to a post, your reply must assume that the original poster's message was intended to be constructive and follow the rules. It's difficult to convey facial expressions or tone of voice over the forums, so a post that appears offensive may be well intentioned. If you cannot assume the original poster acted in good faith, report the post in question, and do not reply at all.
3. No excessive bad language
Watch your language. While it is not our intention to censor all use of colourful language, please respect your fellow participants. We can and will remove excessive, gratuitous and inappropriate use of foul language.
4. Flag adult content (not safe for work / NSFW) or Spoilers
When posting potentially adult content, include a warning. When possible, include the warning in your subject line. If you are posting in an existing thread, consider carefully whether the content is appropriate for the thread. If it is, include a warning at the beginning of your post. Unless your warning is in the subject line, any images must be linked rather than thumbnailed or posted directly. When posting “spoilers,” include a warning. Spoilers include content that gives away endings of movies or television shows, solutions to games or puzzles, and the like.
5. No cross-posting & duplication
If you have something to post and you're not sure which board it belongs in, do not post it in more than one board. If the administrators or moderators think it would fit better in another location, it will be moved there. Duplicate threads only serve to create confusion.
Within reason, avoid derailing someone else's thread. A moderator can split a topic if more than one issue arises that you want to discuss.
7. Signature rules
A typical signature might contain a link to your blog and/ or a favourite quote or saying. Spam links will not be tolerated.
8. Multiple accounts per individual are not permitted
If you forget your password, use the password recovery tool, in which case you will be able to reset your password, given that you have access to the e-mail associated with your account. If you are still unable to login, contact the administrator.
Above all, play nice. Be aware that the above rules are not all-inclusive. If you stir up trouble to prove a point, or engage in a pattern of disruptive behaviour, we will address your actions, even if those actions do not violate any specific rule listed here. We will also handle any issues not specifically covered by the rules on a case by case basis. If you have a problem or a complaint, direct it to the administrators and/or moderators, not to the boards. The appropriate actions will be taken. We reserve the right to ban flagrant offenders when deemed necessary, with or without prior warning.
If you have any questions about these rules, please contact an Administrator or Moderator for clarification. Thank you for helping to keep the Atheist Ireland forums fun and constructive!
Isn't having forum rules against freedom of speech?
We do support freedom of speech, it is very important to us. However, promoting free speech does not mean that we agree to provide a platform for hate speech or gratuitous abuse. The internet is a big place. Get yourself a blog.
