Darwin Exhibition Opens at UCC Library
Specimens collected by Charles Darwin during the voyage that led to the publication of The Origin of Species, will be on display at UCC's Postgraduate Library as part of the University' s celebration of Darwin's 200th anniversary.
A special exhibition will open today (Thursday, February 12th 2009) highlighting Cork's connections with the man credited with developing and explaining the theory of evolution by natural selection.
The exhibit includes species collected by Darwin in Maldonado, Patagonia in South America during the HMS Beagle voyage (1831-1836). The specimens were subsequently purchased by UCC's Departments of Zoology and Geology in the nineteenth century and have been preserved in the university ever since. Also on display will be a first edition of Darwin's The Origin of Species part of UCC's Library Special Collections.
Curated by Special Collections staff member, Siobhán Bowman, the exhibition showcases the natural history collection of the university, many items from which were first collected over 150 years ago. "It's a rediscovery of the QCC (Queen's College Cork, the original name of UCC) natural history collection" explained Siobhán.
Focusing on the close links that existed between the early scientists in the emerging disciplines of Geology, Zoology, and Botany, the exhibition is a showcase of treasures from the Victorian collections of Queen's College Cork, its Library and Natural History Museums.
The exhibition runs from February 12th (Darwin's 200th birthday) until March 31st and is open to members of the public during library opening hours. Admission is free. Opening hours: Monday-Thursday 08.00-22.15; Friday 08.00 -21.15; Saturday & Sunday 10.00-18.45.

It's a very interesting display, highly recommend taking a look. Open to the public and free entry until the end of March. All original specimens taken by the man himself.
