Simon Singh Wins Appeal

Post by Ciaran » Thu Apr 01, 2010 3:48 pm

Singh has won his appeal against the British Chiropractic Association's lible case this morning. There's some nice stuff in the judgement:

"By proceeding against Dr Singh, and not the Guardian, and by rejecting the offer made by the Guardian to publish an appropriate article refuting Dr Singh's contentions, or putting them in a proper perspective, the unhappy impression has been created that this is an endeavour by the BCA to silence one of its critics."

It's great news and an important victory.

The ruling from the judges kind of boosts my confidence in the legal system in general, its extremely well-reasoned and clear. I never thought I'd see quotes from Milton & references to Orwell in a High Court judgement.

Yea some times reading a judges judgement on a subject like this is better than a top Novel. You can be amazed what you find inside it.

At the risk of slightly derailing the topic, we all know the Dover Judgement on Evolution, but if anyone out there has not actually read the Kitzmiller decision document by Judge Jones then I highly recommend doing so. It is a fascinating and at times even highly humorous read.

Depends on the judge(s), I did a few law modules at university, and an awful lot of them are mind-numbing drivel.
Somewhat like reading something the PoMo Generator has cranked out.
The "big" cases tend to be interesting though, and this one is a pretty big case as it will I think become important precedent for Libel cases in the UK for some time to come.

Sounds like the practise of suing those you disagree with is continueing. Here is a post I read on another site this morning:
Quackwatch is one of the few sources of reliable information on alternative medicine on the internet. It is run by retired psychiatrist Stephen Barrett, and offers evidence-based information without fear or favour.

It is now being sued by Doctor's Data, an unscrupulous lab that offers misleading tests for heavy metals for autism and other diagnoses.

You can read about what is happening here:

And you can donate here (I have)

It would be a great shame if it was shut down due to intimidation
