What would be a rational explanation for these?

1. How do you know what the “virgin” Mary looked like?
2. People see patterns in many different ways - remember you do not see with your eyes but with your brain (otherwise you’d see everything upside down).
3. Some people like to believe in mad stuff.
4. So what – If you saw something that you don’t understand – let’s call that a religious experience is not a valid argument.

Lying (most likely scenario)
Hallucinations, confusion/misinterpretation, (less likely scenarios).

What Dev said

Also:
Drugs
Mentally disturbed
Emotionally troubled
Under social duress
Plea for attention (see lying)

[edit] and let's not forget: money-making opportunity...

Or in the cases of tree stumps, finding patterns that don't exist and applying wishful thinking.

BTW. How do you explain the Hindu Milk Miracle. It's far more convincing than any Marian Aparition. Should we all be worshiping Ganesha?

Holding a shiny metal spoon up to the sun in India on a hot day . . and the containing milk disappears after the passage of a modest amount of time.
St. Bernadette of Lourdes wrote: ”For those who believe, an explanation is unnecessary.
For those, who don´t believe, an explanation is impossible.”
Evaporation.

The explanation given by the Indian rationalist society was that the milk was absorbed by the statues but I'm sure evapouration also played a role. The first miracle happend late september 1995, which is technically still in the monsoon season but right at the end of it. It could have been a very dry day. I wonder if we could find out.

The second date is late August 2006 which is in the dry season. I've experienced Delhi during the dry season. It's like being in a desert.

Ah yeah of course. So it's pointless talking about local weather.
