Evidence of life on Titan

Post by bipedalhumanoid » Sun Jun 06, 2010 2:41 pm

www.telegraph.co.uk wrote: Researchers at the space agency believe they have discovered vital clues that appeared to indicate that primitive aliens could be living on the planet.

Data from Nasa's Cassini probe has analysed the complex chemistry on the surface of Titan, which experts say is the only moon around the planet to have a dense atmosphere.

They have discovered that life forms have been breathing in the planet’s atmosphere and also feeding on its surface’s fuel.

It's really interesting stuff - potentially amazing - but it is also another example of news reporters "sexing up" the facts to make it seem a bit more sensational than it is. Or to put it in the words of Carolyn Porco: "What has been found are conditions that could POSSIBLY be explained by life" http://twitter.com/carolynporco

I love Twitter :)

I agree, but it's to be expected I suppose. They also didn't make it clear that the kind of life they'd be expecting to find is microbial. I imagine the image in the head of the average punter, having read about these suspected "primitive aliens", being something akin to tribes of club carying cave men.

They'd have to breath hydrogen & eat acetylene & live at really, really freezing cold temperatures, so those hoping for an early version of the Vikings are in for a bit of a letdown

This article is a bit better, although also goes for the Pimp-My-Warez style headline: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn1 ... -moon.html

Cassini Labs have a good article up now on the subject: Making sense of the news

Carolyn Porco reports that people have been applying for the job of heading out to Titan. Not that there was a job advertised, mind. God loves a trier. :)
Shows you how much people are riveted by this news.

ABC Star Stuff has a good rundown this week: http://www.abc.net.au/science/starstuff/

Phil Plait also added his tuppence worth: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badas ... overed-no/

Hopefully they'll send another probe... Maybe some amphibious rovers
