I didn't mail Conor Lenihan. Let him make a fool of himself...

I read some of the free book extract on that webshite. It's like a bad science project cut and pasted from Wikipedia. As usual it seems to come from the "wow this is so amazing it couldn't just have happened by accident" school of intelligent design.

The formula is pretty well established;

1. Show a few electron microscope photos of a cell/embryo followed by exclamations of wonder
2. Ask some revealing questions to 'expose' the apparently yawning chasms in scientific knowledge
3. Fail to establish any sort of rational alternative theory that doesn't depend on elves/fairies/wondrous supernatural beings.

Can we call the fraud squad?

I called and mailed. Lenihan is making collective fools of us using the state to support this muppet just because he's a constituent - same old parish pump crap. The guy I spoke to in Lenihan's office agreed it was a bit all a bit crazy.

you'll remember conor lenihan launched the revamped humanist association of ireland magazine in 2008 Conor Lenihan launches Humanism Ireland http://www.politics.ie/culture-communit ... eland.html

now you could say well fairs fair treating everything equal, but no, this book is anti-intellectual nonsense, this book lamely attempts to repudiate accepted scientific theory, without going through the proper procedures, is this book peer reviewed? i doubt it, conor lenihan you're a national politician and minister for science show some _judgement_.

yerman seems to have been involved in lots of things if you look at his bio... wonder how they became friends

should a person not go to his friends book launch, well no they should but lenihan has been invited to speak because he is td and minister, not just a friend. what he going to say?

hang on the posters being changed, "TD Minister of Science" isn't beside his name in the poster on his site

Just sent an email there, and asked on the UCC Atheist forum for members to do the same. I'll try to build up the courage to call also tomorrow.

When did you send it? And to what address? Before posting this I e-mailed him, but have yet to get a response.
At 4:32 I sent this
Dear Mr. Lenihan,

It has come to my attention that, as a minister concerned with
Science, that an author is claiming that you are to attend a book
launch of a book attacking one of the core tenants of the Science of
Biology.

As I can not attend the event myself but I am a voter I would be
intensely curious to know why an elected official concerned with
science is supporting an Anti-Science text.

I trust the minister is aware of the vast political and financial
turmoil caused in the states by this issue, and how several schools
were almost taken to the brink of financial melt down by the fall out.

That a Minister in Ireland would wish to bring such controversy to our
shores, especially in the light of the entirely one way results of
both scientific and legal inquiry into the matters concerned in the
States, is a cause for grave concern. There is literally nothing to be
gained in this by the Irish Public, but much suffering that could be
caused by it.

This is quite simply the wrong move for your office and should you go
ahead with this book launch I will make sure you are questioned on it
from as many quarters as I can influence.

Yours
Gavin Mcbride
At 439 I got this:
Dear Gavin,

The author is a friend and constituent. Like any good friendship there are many things on which we agree and many points where we disagree. I look forward to meeting you at the launch. Rergards Conor Lenihan.
At 441 I sent this:
Dear Mr. Lenihan,

A friendship I can understand but not when it affects the role you
have been elected to as a member of Irish Government. This is a book
that is directly anti-scientific and your role is as a minister of
Science. Is the conflict here between the two entirely opaque or do
you see the issue I am attempting to highlight to you?

Yours
Gavin McBride
I then got these at 445 and 446 respectively....
I do not agree with your view on this matter. Regards Conor Lenihan.
I do not agree with you. I am there as a friend and welcome the occasion of the launch to make that clear. Thanks for the email, relax and please do nor become alarmed. There are no implications for existing science policy as a result of my presence. Conor Lenihan.
None of these emails came with disclaimers so I feel happy to paste them all.

I e-mailed Patsy McGarry of the Irish Times. He replied to say that he'll be in Edinburgh awaiting the Pope that evening but would pass it on to his news desk.

A few hours later he e-mailed again to say that he's written a report on it and that it will be on the bottom of page one tomorrow. Hope he treats Lenihan as he should!
