Don't let your expectaions of politicians get too high. Remember they have to get re-elected - mostly by average people (a lot of believers). The best you can hope for is someone who makes silly promises and doesn't keep them.

Oh they're not. But now there is at least some kind of hope that something might change for the better.

I can't see where that hope springs from. Could it be that the previous was below average and that a random selection of the current is therefore more likely to be above the level of the last? Or do you know something about the new guy?

I've already explained that.

The fact that hanafin was given the boot could be interpereted as Cowan looking for change in this area which leaves the possibility open for positive change. Prior to this there was no possibility. Hanafin's actions spoke for themselves. She was going to continue to obstruct educate together in any way she could get away with.

The way I see it, before we had no hope now there's a chance something might change for the better. Whether it does or not we'll have to wait and see.

I heard a commentator say the reason hannifin got moved was because she made promises with regard to class size and funding of new schools which brian as former minister of finance know he wont be able to afford in the current economic conditions. However I hope you are right in saying that liberalisation was also part of cowans thinking.

Yeah I heard about that too. It's one of many things that she has been criticised for recently.

-Broken Promises
-Rejection of ABS education for Autistic children
-Educational Apartheid

I think our biggest problem (as atheists) is that the whole educational apartheid argument has been hijacked by anti-racism liberals and anti-immigration bigots. The whole idea that there is such thing as an Irish atheist is being completely overlooked. People are focused too much on the fact that there are black kids all going to the same school and ignoring the fact that there are people who don't want their kids educated by the CCL.

Post Edit: Of course by ABS I mean ABA. The minister for education is probably not particularly inerested in anti-lock breaking systems.

The 2nd point there is made much of in the Irish media, but although the ex-minister probably made the decision not to fund more Applied Behavioural Analysis on cost grounds, I agree with her.

The benefits of ABA are vastly over-stated. There just isn't any evidence that it works better than other targeted education methods.

I've written about my problems with the hype around ABA as a cure-all for autism lots of times on my blog.

I quite agree. It's important to point out that sometimes people just want a decent education free from church interference and coercion.

Then again, I know a solution to that!
