Just to clarify, companies don't have to pay time-and-a-half for Sunday, just ftr. I work in retail, and I get paid minimum wage Monday-Saturday, and I get paid 10 euro an hour for a Sunday or Bank Holiday. (Significantly less than time-and-half).
I don't think that this move brings us closer to a secular society. I wouldn't mind if the tradition of Sunday was one of those traditions that outsurvived religion.
Basically, I agree with DaithiDublin:

This is far more about propping up employers at the expense of their employees. Even in a secular society it would be nice to have at least one day in the week that is supposedly for rest. Even if you rest by hiking the hills. I'd be just as upset if Christmas was cancelled for the same reason. I love Christmas!
I mean, personally, I hate having to work Sunday. All my family have weekends off; they make plans for the weekend and they inform me at the last minute, so of course I miss everything. Even if I get enough notice, trying to get a Sunday off is really difficult. I also have worked all but one or two Bank Holidays for the past three years (as well as the past three Christmas Eves).
Having to work a Sunday, when most of the people you know are off and spending time together is crap. And I think people who have to work those days should get paid more. /end of story. If anything, Saturday wages should go up, too.
